Editor’s Picks

Editor\'s PickThere are a lot of stories on this site and if you’re new to it, you may be wondering where to start. Here are a few of my personal favorites, along with some notes. Enjoy these and other stories!

Wendy Darling
Keeper, Forever Wraeththu

Of Snow and Thorns
by Mischa
Genre/Keywords: Drama, Angst, Ashmael
One of the first fanfics to appear on the original Forever web site, this is a great story that looks at the aftermath of the traumatic events in Megalithica, described in Bewitchments. Features Ashmael and an original character, plus a whole lotta angst.

Passion’s Acolyte
by Thevina
Genre/Keywords: Drama, Aruna, Cal, Swift
Wonderful short fic inspired by the following lines in Bewitchments:

Sometimes, Cal would come to my room at night. Sometimes we would only sleep together, needing company, but other times, we would scream and struggle and tear at each other until the dawn. He was voracious and the merest touch of him kindled my responsive frenzy.

Beautifully written and, well, HOT. This is the only fic I’ve really ever seen dealing with this particular time period between Cal and Swift.

After the Storm, Restless Fire
by Thevina
Genre/Keywords: Forever, Terzian, Cobweb, Ithiel, Varrs
There aren’t many fics centered around Ithiel and this one does that AND is a lovely, sensuous read. Really reads like a missing chapter in the history of Forever. And my favorite part? The moment when Ithiel asks Cobweb if they might like to try something different. He he. Personally, I’d like to see a follow-up story where Cobweb says YES.

Salt and Sweet and Spice
by Flame Warrior
Genre/Keywords: Kamagrian, Inception
Beautifully written narrative written by a Kamagrian, looking back to her inception. Includes contemplation of gender and tender aruna scenes.

Playing with Matches
by Elfscribe
Fic that explores the details of what went on the *first* time Terzian seduced Cal. Personally my favorite part is Cal discovering Terzian’s unusual fetish… but I won’t give it away here. Read the fic!

Of Gems and Pebbles
by Gingerspark (formerly niennaainur)
I’m not a romance person, and maybe that’s why I like this romance so much. It’s got its romantic aspects, a har falling in love, but it’s got some other things going on, including the sense that even Wraeththu can have communications problems.

Tales of the Far East
by Keyral
Genre/Keywords: Japan, Asia
As far as I know, this is the only Wraeththu fan fic, so far, set entirely in Japan, addressing the question of, how did Wraeththu play out in Japan. Also impressive is the fact that this writer’s native language is French.

Break Open the Massive Dark
by Thevina
Genre/Keywords: Azriel, Aleeme, abuse, psychological healing, post-Shades
Beautifully done fic exploring what became of Aleeme and Azriel in the wake of their abuse at the hands of Ponclast. The story, which focuses on Aleeme, follows the hara from their initial physical healing on through their emotional healing, which takes a great deal longer. In between, there’s a fascinating relationship between them as an original character in the form of a healer. There are also trips to Ferelithia, Immanion and Galhea, plus a couple of juicy dialogues involves Vaysh and Cal. Editor’s admission: Yes, I was one of the beta-readers/editors on this story, but the first time I read it, I swallowed it in a gulp. Great story.

Maelstrom and Mage, Desire Thine Darkling & Down the Whispering Well
by Thevina
Genre/Keywords: Backstory, Vaysh/Ash
There’s a LOT of Ashmael-Vaysh fic out there and a lot of Vaysh fic, but this is really one of the best done ever, with a very full exploration of Vaysh life before, during and after Ashmael. In Maelstrom and Mage, the author covers their story up until the moment when Vaysh’s “first life” ended. Very detailed story with excellent character development, plus strong original characters. In Whispering Well, we see the start of Vaysh’s “second life,” his scouring by Thiede, and his travails with Pell. Again, great character development, many original characters and actually, some hot (if bittersweet) aruna.

Swooping to Landward
by Thevina
Genre/Keywords: Romance, Original Characterrs, Froia
Tie-in/pre-quest to the earlier saga of “Maelstrom” and “Whispering Well.” Beautifully done romantic/arunic tale with great original details of the Froia tribe.

Quare clausum fregit
by Thevina
Genre/Keywords: Aruna, Healing, Vaysh
Tie-in to the earlier saga of “Maelstrom” and “Whispering Well.” Vaysh says goodbye to an old friend, who gives me a gift. Exquisite description of both aruna and Vaysh’s emotional state.

Interpret Me the Savage Whirr
by Thevina
Genre/Keywords: Ashmael, Seel, Saltrock
Wonderful short fic covering the time period described in Wraiths when Seel and Ashmael were roon-buddies. Good character study of Seel.

Along the Line
by Thevina
Genre/Keywords: Cal, Orien, Saltrock murder, madness
Winner of the April 2009 fanfic challenge, this short fic takes a rather scary dive into Cal’s mind during his murder of Orien.

A Calanthe By Any Other Name (is still Cal)
by Thevina
Genre/Keywords: Swift, Seel, Cal
Brilliant short fic set in Imbrilim after the events of Shades, with Swift and Seel at odds over, you guessed it, Cal.

And The Flowers Bloom Like Madness in the Spring & After the Rains
by Camille Sinesis (Teapot)
Genre/Keywords: Drama, Aruna, Romance, Thiede, Velaxis
I love, love, LOVE this duet of Thiede fics. The first, a short piece, answers the question, “How did Thiede feel when he found out Velaxis’ big secret?” The second, longer, explores what Thiede did. Beautifully written and one of the best — the best? — sympathetic interpretations of Thiede I’ve ever come across.

Gossip Between Friends
by Osha
Wonderful short fic featuring one of my personal favorite pairings (see above) — Thiede and Velaxis. Not PWP, but more of a character study, not only of the main pairing but of several other main characters, about whom Thiede and Velaxis gossip.

A Thousand Stars
by Lusa
Genre/Keywords: Cobweb, Snake, Forever
I’ve been drawn to the scene between Cobweb and Snake in Shades since the first time I read it and have indeed read it over and over and over. This short fic explores a scene that could easily have happened an hour or so later. This fic is all about character, not action.

Choosing Sides
by Camille Sinesis (Teapot)
Genre/Keywords: Drama, Aruna, Ashmael, Velaxis
Unique fic featuring Ashmael and Velaxis, set in Imbrilim in the weeks just prior to the arrival of Swift and co. (Bewitchments). Noteworthy for its discussion of gender roles and a lot of snarky commentary from Velaxis.

Even The Longest Day
by Camille Sinesis (Teapot)
Genre/Keywords: Drama, Angst, Hosting, Pell/Cal/Rue
If you’ve ever wondered about Rue’s feelings after being gutted, especially per his inability to have more harlings, this is the fic for you. Beautifully done with an unexpected outcome. Plus a pretty illustration!

Filling the Gap
by Camille Sinesis (Teapot)
Genre/Keywords: Aruna, Thiede
An unusual pairing involving Thiede and ONE of the Triad, not saying who. You’ll just have to read it. Mixes eroticism and humor.

See Who I Am
by Morgana
Genre/Keywords: Drama, Angst, Romance, Aruna, Pell/Cal, Ash/Vaysh
If you’re looking for a good, angsty Pell-Cal / Ashmael-Vaysh fic, this will take care of your fix for sure.

Reconstructing Zia
by Morgana
Genre/Keywords: Angst, Aruna, Sex, Healing
Very cool long story based on Victoria Copus’s Wraeththu Mythos novel Terzah’s Sons. Follows the development of the relationships between human teens Zia and Aris. Boasts some very excellent sex and aruna scenes.

Of Harlings, Hostlings and Chesnaris
by Morgana
Genre/Keywords: Romance, Harling Gardens, Lisia
I swear, this is a favorite of mine not just because it’s based on Breeding Discontent, which I co-wrote, but because it’s very well done. (I personally don’t see Vaysh as this obsessed with pearl-making etc., but that doesn’t ruin the story for me.)

The Longest Night (Ever)
by Haylz and Em
Genre/Keywords: Silly, Cal, Pell, Immanion, Aruna, Horniness, Inebriation
This fic is one long gigglefest… except for the roony interlude towards the end, which is actually HOT. But ooh la la, very funny fic involving very horny Tigrons. If you’ve had enough angst, read this one as a nice dessert.

The Aghama’s True Form
by Mercredi
Genre/Keywords: Fable, Thiede, Humor
Clever little story with Thiede humoring a human archaeologist who discovers an interesting statue. Not quite a silly, but not quite serious either.

Spring Rain
by Martina
Genre/Keywords: Romance, Aruna, Harling
It’s always been a great disappointment to me that Martina abandoned this brilliant, original story, but she say there was no point once the new books came out and made the plot obselete. But it’s such a delightful story!

Indulgence in Sin
by deathangelgw
Genre/Keywords: Aruna, Pell/Cal/Rue
Series of stories, one for each sin. Including lots of, um… SIN! How could you go wrong?

Entrapments and Seducements
by Tessa
Genre/Keywords: Epic, Angst, Abuse, Pell/Cal/Rue — many other pairings
One fanfic writer went so far as to write two book-length stories, The Entrapments of Passion and Pride and The Seducements of Chaos and Order. While these stories are old and (with the new books) to be considered Alternative Universe… and while I have a problem with a couple of the characterizations (e.g. Pell as being a crying, irrational female)… they are pretty darn impressive. One warning is that both sagas contain some pretty disturbing content (torture, miscarriage, death), so be prepared.

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to Wraeththu
by Angelo Ventura
Genre/Keywords: Silly, Crossover
Entirely silly Wraeththu – Hitchhiker’s crossover. The inception bit is hilarious.

The Enchantments of Flesh and Matrix, Reloaded
by Adam P. Knave
Genre/Keywords: Silly, Crossover
My friend the Knave writes some of the most hysterical satire I’ve ever read and this spoof, Wraeththu-meets-Matrix, causes me giggle fits.
